Thirteen

The sun is setting, casting glorious reds and oranges across the sky as I arrive back at Sera's, ready to sleep for a year or two.

"We need to talk." My daughter is laying the table for six while Owen adds glasses. "Gran, Aunty Rose, and Bee are fetching dinner."

"Aunty Rose?" Occasionally, she's aunt, but only aunty when they want to wrap her around their finger, like she doesn't see straight through their ploy.

"Before they're back, Mum, do you need help?" Owen stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ruby. When my kids team up, not that they do often, there is no denying their request. It's probably one of the reasons Lawrence kept them divided. "Mental health help? I know good people who would look after you. Not just shrinks who would push tons of pills on you."

"Why? Because I have my own life? I've moved on from your father? Or because I'm more than a mother to adult kids who don't need a full-time mum?" I'm counting to ten, with my nails digging into my palms, and am still tempted to physically knock their heads together.

"No, because you make deals with shops that stock evil. Wrapped your daughter in a chain. Wear a leather suit that comes from a bracelet. Have a merman in a thimble." Percy takes great umbrage at being brought into this. "You've changed."

"But are you really not going back to Dad?"

"No, she is not, Ruby." Owen storms away from her and fills a jug with water.

"I couldn't. There is nothing in that marriage for me. I don't want to be lonely anymore."

"You were lonely as well?" Ruby's hoarse, distraught whisper seizes my attention.

"As well?" My tiny hope she meant her father dies when her eyes go wide, and she starts fingering her hem. "Ruby? Were you lonely?"

Owen gawps from her to me and back again. A cascade of memories comes to me in a different light. Lawrence would find something great for him and Ruby to do, often shopping and never including Owen, so I'd do something with him. When we got home, Lawrence was preoccupied with anything other than his daughter, and as she got old enough, she was alone.

"He dumped you as soon as he could, didn't he?" I shake with fury, ready to wish myself to my estranged husband's side, to scream at him until my throat is red raw. Can compensation for the children be written into a divorce settlement? It really should be.

"Dad loves me." She lifts her chin defiantly. Bringing us back to the same place we always end up. Ruby defending her father.

"That does not answer my question, and as you won't, I'm going to take that as a yes."

"We got lots of food." Bee's buzzing as she lays it all out, grabs a plate, and piles dishes from several cuisines onto it.

"Where does she put it?" Rose points to Bee. "Even with hollow legs, it still doesn't add up."

"She's a growing girl, and she needs energy. Everyone should eat a healthy amount.
